Maple Haven is located just one-third mile from the center of the Village of North Woodstock in the heart of New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
HISTORY OF THE PROPERTY…. In 1883 the Pemigewasset Valley Railroad was completed providing a quick easy way for travelers to reach the area. Because of this both Woodstock and North Woodstock became popular summer resort towns. Tourism became a primary economic source, along with the traditional logging and forestry industries. In that year the community had three hotels and a number of boarding houses—even though the year round population of the area was below 400.
For over fifty years the property now known as Maple Haven was owned by one of the earliest settlers of Woodstock, the Sawyer’s. The family, lead by Albert Sawyer, built the Fairview Hotel on Route 175 in North Woodstock in 1883. Joseph Sawyer - Albert’s son worked for his father for a number of years before changing careers and working at the local mill. But… after losing his arm in an accident at the mill—he returned to the hospitality business and created the property’s first cottage (# 6) in or around 1919. The other cottages soon followed. The seven tourist cabins were all built between 1919 and 1940. The farmhouse (winter Lodge and Maki family summer residence) is a ca. 1900 building which faces the main route. The Barn (which serves as our Recreation Hall) was built during the same period as the farmhouse.
Approximately 30 years ago, Dan Barry bought the property and continued to run it as a family campground. Soon he met June and they ran the business together along with the assistance of their children (8 among them).
The MAKI’s go to work…. In 2002 the property was purchased by the Maki family. Immediately we began to make some changes and improvements to the property. We have spent a lot of energy on the Camp Store, and have added two NEW outdoor showers. We have also added 3 new sites along the Lost River, and two new wooded sites along our brook. We intend to continue to improve the campground; adding additional sites along the Lost River, modifying the sites along the Pond, and to build a new bath house. |
